What a secondary source is, and why a pharmacy needs one
Every pharmacy has a primary wholesaler: the one it is on contract with, the one most of an order goes through by default. Most weeks that is enough. Some weeks it is not. A manufacturer puts an item on allocation, a primary line runs short on a fast-moving product, or a price shifts somewhere in the chain and the contract terms do not cover it well. Whatever the reason, the shelf still has to be filled, and the customer standing at the counter does not care whose supply problem caused the gap.
That is the job a secondary source does. It is not a replacement for a pharmacy's main wholesaler, and it is not trying to win that contract away. It is the second call: the one a buyer makes specifically because the first call did not get them what they needed. Brand OTC sells six lines wholesale: over the counter medicine, supplements, health and beauty products, beauty supplies, hair care supplies and skin care supplies. All of it goes to pharmacies, not to individual customers, and none of it is sold off a public catalog page, because what is actually in stock in any given week is the whole point of calling a secondary source in the first place.
This is not a storefront, and it does not run like one. There is no walk-in counter to browse and no product page to scroll. A pharmacy buyer calls the number below, says which line they are short on and how much of it they need, and gets an answer about what is actually on hand today. That is the entire model, and it holds whether the pharmacy calling is down the street in Los Angeles or on the other side of the country.
